Q.

I am looking to enter an open class kart, and I was wondering if I can use a motor that exceeds the power limit, as I have found them easier to source.

A.

You’re welcome to use a larger motor but your motor controller cannot be rated above the power limit.
For example, a 2.2kW motor paired with a 2kW controller is actually a great setup as it’s good practice to have a bit of headroom for your motor.

Q.

How do we ensure our vehicle can connect to the ECU on race day?

A.

The ECU uses XT90 connectors. Make sure you have these in your circuit after your killswitch (so that the ECU is also turned off when you power down). Full details on where to find these and how to connect your circuit can be found in our Energy Monitor / ECU section.

Q.

What restrictions are there on vehicle dimensions?

A.

There are no restrictions on vehicle dimensions.

Q.

Can I build my vehicle out of wood?

A.

Absolutely! However, consider rule VR.4.3.1 that says your roll hoop must be strong enough to maintain its shape in a collision. Your roll hoop shouldn’t be made of wood as it is generally not suitable.

Q.

Do we need a seatbelt?

A.

This is no longer a requirement, but if your vehicle performs at a level where one would be sensible then it is suggested you include it.

Q.

We are looking to do a modular build, where parts can be added or removed as needed for each event. Is this allowed?

A.

No. Once scrutineering is complete there are no modifications to be made to your vehicle.

Q.

Can my vehicle be radio controlled?

A.

You’re welcome to make a radio controlled vehicle, but pay mind to rule VR.3.3 that states the driver must remain in contact with the seat whilst driving.

Q.

What are the dimensions of the Standard Kit batteries?

A.

180mm x 75mm x 165mm

Q.

How do I get replacement parts for the Standard Kit?

A.

Email your coordinator, or submit an enquiry using the enquiry form.

Q.

We have acquired some healthy NiMH hybrid batteries and were wondering if we can use them for an Open Kart?

A.

The rules indeed do not mention NiMH batteries, mainly because we have not seen them used in EVolocity before. That said, they are perfectly fine and are a great battery to use.
