Kia Ora EVolocity teams and teachers,
As you know, we are always looking to improve and evolve the EVolocity competition, and we have been busy behind the scenes to finalise our 2024 guidelines and documents.
Gearing up for a thrilling year ahead, we want to share some significant updates and revisions to the competition format and rules for this year. If you are new to the programme this won’t have much impact on your plans, however if you have competed in EVolocity before please make sure you read our updated Rules and WOF sheets before you jump in.
Here are the key changes you need to be aware of:
1. Removal of Competition Class
After careful consideration and feedback, we have decided to remove the Competition Class from the EVolocity competition. This decision was made to streamline the competition and focus on maximising participation and innovation across all levels.
2. Increased Power Limit for Open Class
We’re excited to announce that the power limit for the Open Class has been increased to 2 kW. This adjustment aims to challenge teams to push the boundaries of electric vehicle design while ensuring safety and compliance with competition regulations.
3. Revised Power Limiting Strategy
To maintain fairness and competitiveness, we have implemented a revised power limiting strategy for all classes. Detailed guidelines regarding power limiting is provided in the updated competition rules document.
4. Removal of Battens and Water from Gymkhana
To simplify the Gymkhana event and focus on agility and precision driving skills, we have decided to remove battens and water obstacles from the course. This adjustment aims to streamline the event while still providing an exciting and challenging experience for teams.
5. Clarifications and Tweaks to Existing Rules
We’ve made a series of clarifications and tweaks to existing rules based on feedback from previous competitions and to ensure clarity and consistency in competition guidelines. These updates aim to address any ambiguities and improve the overall competition experience.
If you have previously participated in EVolocity, you might be wondering –
“We already have parts for a competition class kart, can we still race?
Yes. As long as the vehicle meets the Open class rules, it will be an open class vehicle. It does not matter what the motor rating is as the power limit/penalty system will be on each vehicle. In other words, a 3kW motor can be used in the open class because the power limiting will ensure it does not draw more than 2kW (per the rules).
“Will teams that have 2kW motors have a big advantage over teams that have 1kW motors?”
Not necessarily. Vehicles that have a motor rating close to or above the 2 kW limit will have to closely monitor their power draw to avoid harsh penalties, whereas 1kW class karts will largely drive normally. Given that peak draw will often be around 3x the continuous rating, from EVolocity’s experience, we do not expect that there will be a notable disadvantage.
