E-vehicle Race Events Pit School Teams against each other.
Secondary students from all around New Zealand are gearing up for their biggest-ever secondary school EVolocity Electric Vehicle race days! Teams of young men and women will race their own specially designed and built electric vehicles at the regional finals being held in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch throughout September.
Race Days start for spectators 10am with a variety of events including drag races, innovation and performance challenges, as well as a competition for the best-presented vehicle and team. Spectators can visit the pits and see how teams have approached design and fabrication challenges differently – and at the varied solutions each team has employed to solve the same problems. These vehicles haven’t been built on an assembly line! There will also be opportunities for spectators to test drive e-vehicles and ride and buy electric bikes.
Rob McEwen, Executive Director of EVolocity, says EVolocity has a couple of key objectives. “It’s partly about opening young people’s eyes to the possibilities of engineering careers. But it’s also about turning the drivers of both today and tomorrow onto electric vehicles. Our schools programme is educating young people on how electric vehicles work and what their performance and environmental benefits are. And our events are educating all ages of people as to the performance, economic and environmental benefits of EVs.”
Sponsor and fundraising support comes from regional tertiary institutions, energy providers and the business community investing in and creating career pathways for future generations within sustainable technology and environmental care.
The annual EVolocity EV Challenge student teams need everything from tents to TIG welding. And support from expert volunteers with mentoring and troubleshooting throughout the build-phase is invaluable and a great way to get involved with a local student team in your community.
